Texas Holdem Poker Hand Ranking

To learn poker hand rankings its often easyer for players learning Texas Holdem Poker to start with the lesser hands and work up to the best hands. The worst hand in poker is a hand that has nothing. But a begining player cant identify a "nothing" hand until they learned all the hand rankings, so lets start with One Pair.

Any card in the 52 card deck has two components; rank and suit. A 6 of hearts has a rank of 6 and a suit of hearts for example. You have a pair when you have two cards of the same rank, a 6 of hearts and a 6 of clubs for example. Another thing to remember is that if your opponet also has a pair of 6 (6 of diamonds and spades) the highest single card in each hand will determine the wining hand. This card is called the kicker. A one pair hand is a weak hand, it helps if it is a high card pair.

The next higher value of hand rank in poker is Two Pair. Two pair is having two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. For example having two queens and two eights. Once again you have at least one extra card. Extra card is your kicker card and is used to settle ties.

The next higher value of hand rank in poker is Three of a Kind. When you have three cards of the same rank you have Three of a Kind. Often called "trips" for short. An example of Three of a Kind would be Queen of spades, Queen of diamonds, Queen of hearts.

Texas Holdem Poker Hand Ranking

The next higher value of hand rank in poker is a Straight. A Straight is five cards in sequence (rank) but the suits are not all the same. For example 9 of diamonds, 8 of hearts, 7 of diamonds, 6 of clubs, 5 of spades. Always think of your card order as counting from high card to the low card 9d,8h,7d,6c,5s not 5s,6c,7d,8h,9d. Also remember that the Ace card can be used either as the lowest card (card insequence under the 2 card) or as the highest card (card insequence above the King Card).

The next higher value of hand rank in poker is a Flush. A Flush is five cards that have the same suit but all cards are not in sequence (rank). For example Queenh, 10h, 8h, 7h, 5h. A hand rank of a Flush is easy to identify, you see 5 heart cards, or 5 diamond cards, or 5 club cards, or 5 club cards.

The next higher value of hand rank in poker is a Full House. A Full House can be thought of as a poker hand with a Three of a Kind and a Pair. An example of a Full House would be Kh, Kd, Kc, 8h, 8d.

The next higher value of hand rank in poker is Four of a Kind. Four of a Kind is four cards that all have the same rank. An example of Four of a Kind is Jh, Jd, Jc, Js. Four of a Kind is also called Quads.

The highest value of hand rank in poker is a Straight Flush. A Straight Flush is 5 cards that are all the same suit and all their ranks are in squence. An example of a Straight Flush would be 8h, 7h, 6h, 5h, 4h. There is one Straight Flush so important that it has its own name Royal Flush. A Royal Flush is a Straight Flush with an Ace as the high card. An example of a Royal Flush would be Ad, Kd, Qd, Jd, 10d. The Royal Flush is the best Teaxas Holdem Poker Hand possible, nothing beats it. If your got a Royal Flush your draging in the chips.

A few other points to remember. A poker hand is allways 5 cards, unused cards are never considered. Any hand in a higher category beats any hand in a lower category no matter what the value of the card ranks used. For example Three of a Kind 2d, 2h, 2c always beats One Pair Kd, Kh even though Kings have a higher single card rank then 2. Now that you know how to determine the hand ranking from One Pair all the way to Royal Flush, you can now determine when a hand has the lowest hank ranking-Nothing, or called High Card. If a hand has nothing, then it can only beat another nothing hand with a lower high card.

If your having a hard time remembering how to figure out hand rankings, start off remembering some of the basics; Its good to have more than one card of the same value. Its good to have all of your cards in squence, Its good to have all your cards the same suit. And all things being equal its better to have higher cards.
